LIBEREC - Architecture and construction students from universities in Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic will collaboratively design the future appearance of a pedestrian and cyclist bridge at the Three Borders point. Hrádek nad Nisou, together with the German town of Zittau, organized a workshop aimed at producing the future design of the bridge. This was reported by the deputy mayor of Hrádek nad Nisou in the Liberec region, Hedvika Zimmermannová. According to Zimmermannová, the workshop is the first step towards connecting cycling paths in the Three Borders area and symbolically linking the Euroregion Nisa. Currently, all three involved parties - the Czech, Polish, and German parts of the euroregion - have submitted a request for the establishment of a border crossing for pedestrians and cyclists at the Three Borders point. The cities aim to obtain funding from European funds for the development of project documentation and the construction of the bridge. "The actual opening of the bridge will depend not only on securing financing but especially on the speed at which the establishment of a tourist crossing is discussed within the relevant authorities of the three countries," said Zimmermannová. The workshop will kick off on February 9 in Zittau. It will be attended by 26 students from universities in Zittau, Wrocław, and Liberec, with the largest representation coming from the Liberec Faculty of Architecture, which will send 16 students to the event. The announcement of the winning design will take place on February 13. The bridge for tourists is not the only planned construction in this area. Much more urgently needed is the construction of a road bridge, which will facilitate truck transport between the countries. Although the prime ministers of Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic began construction on May 1, 2004, neither the bridge nor the road that is supposed to connect to it has been built yet.
