Prague - Hundreds of churches will open their doors this evening and during the night on Saturday, inviting both believers and non-believers inside. People can look forward to candlelit tours, theatrical performances, organ concerts, and games for children.
The event Night of Churches originated a few years ago in Austria; last year, people from the Brno and Pilsen dioceses tried it out. This year, the event will take place across the entire Czech Republic. A few minutes before 6:00 PM, the event will be inaugurated by the ringing of church bells, and the program in many parishes will continue until after midnight.
Prague Archbishop Dominik Duka is also preparing for the Night of Churches. He is expected to gradually appear at St. Vitus Cathedral, at the Church of Our Lady before Týn in Old Town Square, and at St. Giles in Old Town.
Visitors will have the opportunity to enter churches and monasteries that they otherwise could not access. For example, the Capuchin monastery in Prague on Hradčany and the Franciscan monastery near Václavské Square in Prague will be open.
At Holy Mountain near Příbram, people will be able to descend into the stalactite chapel of St. Mary Magdalene, and in Vrané nad Vltavou, they will listen to an unusual musical arrangement of organ and saxophone.
Over 300 churches across the Czech Republic are joining the event, including 44 Catholic and Protestant churches and prayer houses in Prague.
