Prague - Workers at construction sites mostly work even in such hot weather as is currently prevailing in the Czech Republic. Companies have contracted jobs and must adhere to them. Some companies at least shift the start of the working day to early morning hours, so workers can finish, for example, after noon. There is also a greater emphasis on the hydration of employees. This follows from responses from construction companies that were contacted by ČTK today. "Construction workers on our projects work even in these high temperatures to keep to the schedule of each project," said ČTK spokesman of Sekyra Group Radek Polák. The company, however, provides workers with more water to drink. According to the spokesman of the construction company Metrostav František Polák, in hot weather, workers organize their tasks so that physically demanding activities are carried out outside the hottest part of the day. Additionally, professions most affected by the heat, such as roofers, tilers, road asphalters, or facade workers, choose to take their holidays or mandated time off. The company also pays attention to the hydration of all employees and regularly alternates brands of bottled water, mineral waters, and teas, Polák stated. Miluše Netolická from Central Group noted that the workers from the construction supervision have a more relaxed routine today and can even go home in this heat. Tomáš Mazal from Skanska mentioned that workers and technicians have adjusted schedules for construction work to avoid direct sunlight, but they certainly do not go home. According to the director of transport construction at Swietelsky František Fryš, the current heat is probably the worst for workers on machines that lay asphalt mixtures on roads, known as finishers. The temperature of the mixture can reach up to 180 degrees; workers must also wear protective clothing and sturdy shoes. Therefore, the company provides a large amount of water to finishers and has adjusted the working hours so that workers finish around noon. According to Fryš, drivers of rollers or excavators are faring better. "These are modern machines, most of which already have air conditioning," he added.
