Prague - The Central Bohemian Region maintained its reputation as a "good address" in the first half of this year. From January to the end of June, 4,978 new apartments were started here, which is the most in the republic. The first place also belonged to the Central Bohemians in the number of completed apartments, which amounted to 3,545. This information was published today by the Czech Statistical Office.

Compared to the first half of last year, the number of newly started apartments in the region increased by almost a thousand, while the number of completed apartments remained practically the same. Apartments are being built by individuals as well as development companies. The vast majority of them are being created in family homes.
The highest intensity of residential construction in recent years has been observed in the districts of Prague-West, Prague-East, Nymburk, and Kolín. The highest number of completed apartments per 1,000 inhabitants in recent years has been attributed to the municipalities of Květnice, Mukařov, Mnichovice, Chýně, Nupaky, Bašť, Jenštejn, Holubice, Mratín, Jesenice, Vestec, and Šestajovice. However, the massive influx of residents is not matched by civic amenities. The main problem is inadequate infrastructure and a lack of places in primary and nursery schools. As a result, some municipalities are already trying to regulate residential construction.
Despite the growing residential construction, the number of residents with permanent residence in the region is not increasing, which creates further concerns for municipalities. For example, Jesenice near Prague officially has 5,500 inhabitants, but according to estimates, another 1,500 to 1,800 people live there permanently without registered residency. According to Mayor Zdeněk Pánek, this results in a loss of ten million crowns annually in taxes, which is at least a tenth of the municipal budget.
According to estimates from the regional office, up to a third of the people living in municipalities around Prague are not registered for permanent residence. In the autumn, the region will urge them through a campaign to legalize their residence in Central Bohemia. It also plans to prepare legislative proposals that would require residents to take similar steps when changing residence. The Central Bohemian Region also intends to relieve municipalities around Prague from growing traffic, among other things through the preparation of the construction of the D3 highway or by repairing roads in their vicinity.
In the whole of the Czech Republic, 21,931 apartments were started and 16,515 apartments were completed in the first half of the year.
