A private investor may build a recreational area in Železná Ruda

Železná Ruda (Klatovy) - A golf center, higher category hotel, swimming pool, and ski area may be built in Železná Ruda by a private investor. By the end of the year, the representatives of the two-thousand-strong recreational center will approve a change in the zoning plan, and immediately afterwards, they will offer the area in Alžbětín, between Czech and Bavarian Železná Ruda, to investors. This was stated by the mayor of the largest winter resort in the Plzeň region, Michal Šnebergr.
"Our town, which has problems financing the maintenance of roads, buildings, and waste collection, cannot participate in the project. It must be clearly a private activity," he added. The town hall, which aims to transform the town into a high-quality mountain resort comparable to Bavarian and Austrian centers, is relying on strong foreign investors who are allegedly already coming forward. Šnebergr declined to speculate on the number or offers until the zoning plan is changed.
"We need a large public swimming pool," said the mayor. Tourists used to travel to Bavarian Železná Ruda until last year, which, however, closed its indoor swimming area due to high operational costs. The reopening was financially supported by the Plzeň region and Czech Železná Ruda, but the new tenant went bankrupt. The Bavarian mayor has now proposed covering the operational costs from fees paid by tourists, for example, from air access. "We are looking for a financing model, but it is a question of whether the Czech side will accept it after past problems," said the mayor.
Several hotels, such as Horizont, Stella, Ostrý, and Čertův Mlýn, have pools, but they are smaller and not always open to the public. The mayor and the representatives are banking the most on the Alžbětín project, where alongside the pool, there would also be a large wellness center and facilities for spa operations.
The Alžbětín area has so far been heavily utilized by market traders. Their era is coming to an end. Železná Ruda needs to look for investors with serious offers, added Šnebergr. It cannot be said how many hundreds of millions the private project will cost. It depends on the possibilities of the developers. However, the town hall will create all the legal documents for it so that the area can be quickly utilized. The winter ski park primarily plans for cross-country trails, but also for downhill slopes.
