Opava - Silesian University in Opava is preparing a large-scale renovation of the Faculty of Public Policies at Bezruč Square, associated with the construction of a new university library building. This will be the largest investment project in the history of the university. Ivan Augustin informed ČTK on behalf of the university. The reconstruction will begin at the start of next year and is expected to be completed by the end of 2015, followed by the interior furnishings. The university anticipates that the summer semester of the academic year 2015/2016 could commence in the renovated spaces for the Faculty of Public Policies. The work is divided into phases and will not disrupt the operation of the building. "Additionally, concurrently with this, from spring 2014 until the end of May 2015, a new library extension will be constructed in the courtyard area of the building," said Jiří Štefek, head of the investment department of the rectorate. The project originally estimated that the costs for the renovation of the building and the library extension could be around 370 million crowns, but during the selection of the contractor, it was managed to reduce this to 225 million crowns in the competition. The modernization is financed from the state budget. In the first phase of the work, the reconstruction of the right wing of the building, constructed in 1907 for the needs of the Regional Financial Directorate, is planned, which came into the ownership of Silesian University in 2006. A new gas boiler room will be built in the attic, as well as a transformer station in the basement, which will also house space for archives. There will also be offices for the Institute of Pedagogical and Psychological Sciences in the attic. The dean's office will have designated spaces on the fourth floor, below which there will be a lecture hall with a capacity of 60 seats. "Work in the right wing should be completed by next year, in December 2014, after which the commissioning of the new boiler room and the reconstruction of the left wing will follow," noted Štefek. The original building will be connected to the library extension via connecting corridors. In the extension, which will have one less above-ground floor than the historical building, there will also be two large-capacity lecture halls, each accommodating approximately 190 people, in addition to the library.
