Educators and students of the Faculty of Architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague have been addressing the topic of the future development of our housing estates for several years. The results of their research are presented in the publication "Housing Estates, What Next?", which was ceremoniously launched at the international conference European Habitat in March.

About a third of the population of the Czech Republic lives in housing estates today, with even less than half in Prague. Society has so far focused mainly on the revitalization of individual buildings and their construction-technical standards. Now it is time to look for a long-term strategy.

What next? What is the perspective of housing estates? How to conceptually engage with these areas and how to initiate the process of their gradual transformation into attractive parts of the urban structure? How to limit the risks of future negative developments?

These questions open one of the key topics of spatial planning and city management in the Czech Republic and in the entire Central European region. It is clear that finding suitable strategic approaches and sustainable solutions can only be achieved through a broader interdisciplinary and societal dialogue. The publication Housing Estates, What Next? aims to be a professional contribution to such a discussion. Its goal is to identify and name topics significant from the perspective of environmental organization and its urban and architectural quality, to suggest possible directions for their resolution, and to offer them for broader discussion.

The publication summarizes the results of the similarly named research at the Faculty of Architecture, CTU, and is divided into three parts. The introductory theoretical section analyzes the foundations of housing estate construction and provides a general summary of the possibilities for their further development. The second presents 18 model studies and 2 pilot projects for modifications of specific locations in Czech cities. The final part of the publication is dedicated to data overviews and graphical comparisons: it contains the results of analyses of the studied areas of Czech housing estates, comparisons of individual case studies, and an overview of the most interesting European examples of housing estate regeneration from the last 25 years.

The book is published under the auspices of the Institute of Building Science at the Faculty of Architecture, CTU in Prague. It was created with the support of the Ministry for Regional Development, the towns of Jilemnice, Karlovy Vary, and Mladá Boleslav, and the city districts of Prague 10 and Prague 14. The publication was supported by the Czech Architecture Foundation, the Publishing Fund of the Faculty of Architecture, CTU, and the company mmcité.

The distributor of the publication is the publishing house and publisher Zlatý řez. The book can be purchased at selected bookstores or at a discounted price directly from the publisher or at the University Bookstore of professional literature at NTK, Technická 6, Prague 6-Dejvice.
