Prague – The developer group Sekyra Group will build 1,650 apartments, offices, and retail spaces in the central part of the planned Rohan City project in Prague's Karlín district for 15 billion crowns. Part of the project will be created according to the design of Polish-American architect Daniel Libeskind, known for the memorial at the site of the World Trade Center in New York. Four buildings with 500 apartments named Sekyra Flowers will be Libeskind's first project in the Czech Republic. The developer could obtain construction permits within a year and a half. Company representatives told journalists today. The entire Rohan City district is expected to be completed by 2035, with total costs amounting to 30 billion crowns.
Each of the four Libeskind buildings will be divided into three parts. The buildings will feature shiny facades with windows of various shapes. They are intended to feel both organic and geometric. The towers will have greenery on the roofs and will be clad in metal tiles that will capture and reflect light, evoking the impression of blooming flowers. A new central square will also be part of the project, and Libeskind has been working on its design. The architect drew inspiration for the square, which will be named after philosopher Simone Weil, from the historic public spaces of Karlín.
"Sekyra Flowers will be an architectural contribution to the current blooming of Prague and my tribute to this magical city. They will rise in the heart of the new Rohan City district and are among the most interesting and ambitious works I have designed. Their foundations rest in a deep ethical and philosophical space that shows the very essence of why I dedicate myself to architecture. It is not just about shaping buildings but also about creating an environment that embodies openness, community, and the future - a vision that has accompanied my work since the very beginning," said Libeskind.
Daniel Libeskind (79) previously worked on the redevelopment of the World Trade Center in New York, where two airplanes controlled by terrorists crashed in 2001, resulting in the creation of a memorial called Ground Zero. Among his other well-known projects are the Jewish Museum in Berlin and a multifunctional arena in Tampere, Finland.
Sekyra Group estimates that it should obtain all permits for the construction phase, which includes the new square and the Sekyra Flowers buildings, within a year and a half. Streets, parks, and squares there will be named after prominent Czech and foreign philosophers. There are also plans to establish a national center for reading culture with a library, which could be located in Libeskind's project. The remaining buildings, which are part of the central phase, form a complex of four blocks. Their design involves architectural studios MS architekti, edit architects, Schindler Seko architects, CHYBIK + KRISTOF, and JAKUB CIGLER ARCHITEKTI. The total costs for this phase will reach 15 billion crowns.
In the construction of the entire Rohan City district, which is expected to be finished by 2035, in addition to new apartments, a wide promenade along the Vltava River will be created from the existing bike paths, connecting to the future expansive Maniny park being prepared in collaboration with the city. According to the developer, a park comparable to Stromovka will thus be created. It will connect to the Kaizl Gardens in front of the Invalidovna and will continue along the waterfront promenade.
