The Roma in Žatec want to live in construction containers

Žatec (Lounsko) - Roma from Žatec in the Louny region would welcome it if the town hall would allow them to live in mobile units, similar to what the leadership of Moravian Vsetín did for the Roma. The Roma association contacted the Žatec town hall to ask whether building and modifying unused construction containers would help solve the pressing housing situation for a large number of Roma families in the city, writes today's Northern Bohemia edition of Mladá fronta Dnes (MfD).
    "For someone who has nowhere to live, it's better than nothing," said Štefan Kudrač from the association to the newspaper. The Žatec town hall is considering cheaper housing for socially disadvantaged families in the city. They have already selected several possible locations for building inexpensive homes. "We do not want this housing to be built in isolation outside the city. It should not be in the surrounding villages either," stated Žatec's deputy mayor Aleš Kassal.
    According to him, the Roma association could manage the newly constructed houses. "They will guarantee that the rent will actually be collected. A portion of the money could then be received by the association for its activities,” he added.
    If the Roma were to participate in the construction of mobile units, they could also obtain a discount on the rent. The association has already provided the town hall with contact information for a company in Čepiroh near Most, where unused construction containers are sold.
