Ostrovec-Lhotka (Rokycansko) - Unique examples of folk architecture, including entire collections of old timber cottages, still exist today in the Rokycansko region. A rarity is, for example, the mill from the 18th century near Ostrovec-Lhotka and the village of Ostrovec with its typical so-called chamber-type houses, which is the only village monument reservation in the district. A large number of remarkable buildings have also been preserved thanks to cottage owners. Interest in timber houses began during the normalization period and continues to this day. This was stated by heritage protection specialist Karel Foud from the Plzeň branch of the National Heritage Institute. "Many buildings would have long since ceased to exist. Cottage owners have been and often are willing to compromise on comfort. This is also why the archaic nature of some rare buildings is preserved," he noted. An example of a rare monument owned by a private individual is the so-called Zímův Mill in Ostrovec, which is located in the valley below the village by the stream. It is unique because it has been preserved in the form in which it stood for the entire 19th century. "It is one of the few mills in the Plzeň region built in log construction. It is entirely wooden; even in the 1960s, it had thatched roofs, now it has wooden shingles on the roof," Foud stated. In addition to the two-story mill, the whole village of Ostrovec is noteworthy, where a collection of timber cottages typical of the Rokycansko region is located. These are houses of the so-called chamber type, where in addition to the living room and the hall, there was also a chamber in the third part. Ostrovec is the only village monument reservation in the Rokycansko region. The collection of timber buildings there is numerous, but some have already been replicated, such as the village bell tower. The advantage is the beautiful surrounding landscape and the fact that the village is largely untouched by modern modifications. According to heritage protection specialists, the roofs of the houses in Rokycansko are also typical. They often extend over the porch, which protects the exterior walls of the building. The entire area is characterized by a rich fund of folk architecture with a diverse typological range. Rokycansko also offers a collection of small sacred buildings ranging from bell towers to village chapels, most of which date back to the 19th century. In addition to the only monument reservation in Ostrovec, there are several village monument zones in the Rokycansko region. Remarkable timber buildings and structures can also be found in the villages of Dobřív, Vejvanov, Jablečno, and elsewhere. A large number of wooden barns can still be found in Rokycansko, but interest in them is no longer as significant as in the case of timber houses.
