Brno - Home and apartment owners in Brno are likely to pay significantly more in property tax next year. City councilors propose that it increases threefold. Property tax is a source of income for cities and municipalities, and if the city hall raises it, they will benefit. In the case of Brno, it would amount to about 280 million crowns more, Mayor Roman Onderka told journalists today. The norm still needs to be approved by the representatives. A new law allows municipalities to increase property tax. The increase can be up to five times. The amount of tax is calculated based on the area. For example, for a family house without a garden with a living area of 120 square meters, residents of Brno are currently paying 420 crowns; it will be 1260 crowns under the new rules. For an equally sized apartment, the tax will rise from 504 to 1512 crowns. For a garden of 1000 square meters in the Tuřany district, the amount will increase from 64 crowns to 192 crowns, said Zuzana Gregorová from the city hall's media department to ČTK. "The increase in this tax will be visible to the citizens of the city of Brno," admits Onderka. All the money collected from the tax increase is intended to be invested by the Brno leadership into the construction and repair of roads, sidewalks, public lighting, and other infrastructure. "If there is something the city has long-term difficult problems with, it is infrastructure," said Deputy Mayor Oliver Pospíšil. For instance, the capacity of the sewage system is currently overburdened in some parts of the city, which hinders further construction. According to Onderka, the city will invest in infrastructure, for example, in the newly built Kamechy housing estate. A new tram line is also planned to be built to the expanding campus of Masaryk University.
