Karlovy Vary

Karlovy Vary - The City Council of Karlovy Vary has rejected the construction of two new modern residential buildings that were to be built in so-called quiet zones. The councilors issued their dissenting opinion despite the fact that the Department of Urban Planning and Development agreed to both buildings under certain conditions. One was to be located in the area of Na Milíři, the other on Křižíková Street. The construction office will now decide whether the buildings will be built. Jiří Klsák (KOA), the deputy mayor, said this today to ČTK.
The building Na Milíři, consisting of a total of nine floors, is designed as a terraced building, with six floors sloping down the hill. According to Klsák, this is already the third modified study of the building prepared by the same investor. However, the council wants the study to be revised again. Klsák noted that it is problematic mainly in relation to so-called distant views, and access to the buildings is also complicated. "We rejected the access road from the Old Prague Road, which is a national technical monument," the deputy pointed out.
The councilors are even more dismissive of the second project called Caran d'Ache on Křižíková Street. In this case, it concerns an extension of a residential building to an already existing house. According to the proposal, it should be a six-story structure in the shape of a giant pencil 22 meters high. Klsák stated that it might be an interesting project, but it is not suitable for the area at all. "How both projects will ultimately turn out is still only a matter of speculation. In any case, we expect to be supported by heritage protectors in the further proceedings," added Klsák.
The current ruling coalition (KOA, TOP 09, Alternative, movement What They Want?!) has frequently criticized its predecessors in the city hall (ODS and ČSSD) for their insensitivity in approving many constructions in quiet zones and spa areas in the past. This included, for example, the garage and residential building under Imperial or some other residential complexes. Addressing deficiencies in this area was one of the coalition's priorities. "With the decision on the buildings at Na Milíři and Křižíková Street, we are making it clear how we envision development in the city," the deputy added.
