Prague - Part of the Prague Monument Reserve, which has been under the protection of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) since 1992, includes the Central Bohemian Průhonice Park. This was decided by the UNESCO committee at a recent meeting in Brazil. Zdeněk Novák, the director of the International Relations Department of the Ministry of Culture, told Czech Radio Radiožurnál.
"This is great news not only for landscape architects and heritage conservationists but also for the staff of the Botanical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, which manages Průhonice Park. But above all, it's good news for the municipality of Průhonice and the Central Bohemian Region," Novák said.
The park, covering over 200 hectares, which is associated with the neo-Renaissance Průhonice Castle, includes a significant collection of plants and has high scientific value in addition to its aesthetic value. It is one of the largest natural landscape parks in Europe. The Ministry of the Environment nominated it for the UNESCO list as an exceptional work of 19th-century landscape architecture in 1992.
"Since then, it has not been entirely clear whether Průhonice Park is or is not under the protection of UNESCO. It was not completely clarified whether the park is directly within the protective zone like the center of Prague," Novák stated. However, the committee's leadership reportedly decided at the meeting in Brazil that the park belongs to the Prague Monument Reserve and thus under the protection of World Heritage.
The intergovernmental organization UNESCO, based in Paris, is one of the 14 specialized agencies of the United Nations. It was established in 1946 with the aim of strengthening cooperation among states in education, science, and culture.
