The area in front of the Postal Museum is adorned with a statue of Ivan Jilemnický

Prague - The space in front of the Prague Postal Museum building in Nové Město is adorned from today with a sculpture titled Tribute to the Postage Stamp. It was created by sculptor Ivan Jilemnický. The sculpture made of Hradec Králové sandstone, measuring 220 by 150 centimeters, depicts a stamp with a postal pigeon as the messenger of news. The author officially unveiled the sculpture today in front of the Postal Museum alongside representatives from the Gallery of the Capital City of Prague, the Prague magistrate, and the Postal Museum.
The sculpture was conceived back in 1978 on the occasion of the stamp exhibition Praga 1978. However, it was not utilized at that time because the author was out of favor with the regime. In 2008, Jilemnický decided to dedicate the sculpture to the capital city with the wish that it be placed in the park in front of the Postal Museum building.
The placement of the statue in front of the museum was resolved by the author together with architect Petr Keil. The sculpture is surrounded by the greenery of the park and greets visitors heading to the entrance of the Postal Museum, which is situated in the historic building of Vávrova Mill.
The Post Office is issuing a postcard for the ceremonial unveiling of the sculpture featuring a print based on Jilemnický's design. Philatelists and museum visitors will be able to purchase it this Saturday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. During these hours, a postal counter will be open in the museum with a special cancellation stamp also made according to the sculptor's design.
