BRNO - The reconstruction of the Brno railway junction will begin in June of next year, and a larger part of the twenty-billion investment will likely be covered by the European Union. This is accounted for in the funding model for the project, which was publicly presented today by Minister of Transport Milan Šimonovský and representatives of the Brno city council and the South Moravian region. The state is already preparing a presentation of the project for the European Commission. The junction is planned to be constructed over ten years, with completion expected in December 2015.
According to Šimonovský, the goal of the project is to leverage Brno's strategic location and turn the city into a European railway crossroads. The South Moravian metropolis is set to see a completely new and relocated main railway station, a new railway transit through Brno, and other railway constructions. If Brno is to be a transport hub on the future corridor connecting northern and southern Europe, it must adapt its transport infrastructure accordingly, believes the minister.
