PŘEROV - The former workers' cooperative house Trávník in Přerov, which was once the central place of party life, could be removed from the list of cultural monuments in the future. This was proposed by the Přerov city hall to the Ministry of Culture. The monument is currently in a deplorable state after the floods. The current owners intend to build a new commercial zone in its place.

"The condition of the monument since the flood is so precarious that if the owners were bound by the heritage protection authorities, they wouldn't undertake the reconstruction. It's a question of whether to keep the cultural monument at the cost of the building collapsing," said deputy mayor Elena Grambličková (ODS) to reporters today. She noted that the owners requested to be removed from the list of monuments as early as the mid-90s, but to no avail.
According to the manager of the Brno-based company Reinvest Corporation, which currently owns the property, repairing the building would be very costly. "The building is in a deplorable state, it was declared a monument for ideological reasons because a bust of Klement Gottwald stood in front of it. It would be extremely expensive to reconstruct it. We would like to build some kind of commercial arcade on this site," said company manager Jan Prokop to ČTK.
The city hall has supported the company's plans, and the Ministry of Culture is now requesting the cancellation of the declaration of the former workers' cooperative house Trávník as a cultural monument.
The workers' house, which is the only preserved building of its kind in the city and surroundings, was built in the early 20th century. The building was designed by the notable Přerov architect Robert Motka. It became a center for party life, proletarian physical education, and cultural, theatrical, and musical factions of the party in the Přerov district. Gatherings attended by leading members of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia also took place there. The property was listed as a monument of the labor movement with reference to the activities of the Communist Party in 1963.
The building now suffers from dampness, has statically compromised load-bearing structures, and also has the presence of mold.
