Prague - Prague has taken a significant step towards the construction of a new wing of the archive in Chodovec. The material, which accounts for an investment of 640 million crowns excluding VAT, was approved today by the councilors. It will be brought to the representatives at the end of February. Construction is expected to begin this year and continue next year. The building will serve for the archiving of paper and electronic documents. The selection process for the contractor was initiated by Prague as early as 2012. However, there was a long hesitation in the selection. Deputy Mayor Václav Novotný (TOP 09) stated today in response to a CTK inquiry that the councilors were unsure whether to build the archive for such a large sum. Subsequent analyses have shown that there is no other solution. The capacity of the existing archive will be filled within two years. Furthermore, many documents are currently stored in various locations in Prague, often in unsuitable conditions. A building will be created with one underground and seven above-ground floors. In the new spaces, digitalized archival materials and documents, as well as paper official files, will be stored. Some documents were provisionally stored in various locations after the floods in 2002, such as in the railway station building in Bubny or in the Clam-Gallas Palace in Mariánské náměstí. According to Novotný, the commissioning of another part of the archive will also pave the way for the long-planned renovation of the Clam-Gallas Palace. Due to the preservation of archival materials, Prague will face additional investments in the future as well. The law requires the city to also establish a backup data storage. It should be located in Malovanka, where a control center for the Blanka tunnel complex will be created. The archive of the capital city of Prague is located in Chodovec together with the State Regional Archive and the National Archive. Together, they form one complex.
