Lawyers will once again discuss the National Library today

Prague - Several months of deliberation about whether a new building for the National Library designed by architect Jan Kaplický will stand in Letná, continues into the new year contrary to the original plan. Today, an expert group of lawyers, which is one of the three advisory boards of the National Library team, will discuss some aspects of the potential construction at its next meeting.
    The commission was established in October. It seeks a solution to the situation after Prague representatives from ODS opposed the project. Its seven-member presidency includes, among others, Mayor Pavel Bém, Library Director Vlastimil Ježek, and architect Kaplický. They have advisory teams composed of architects, heritage conservationists, and lawyers at their disposal.
    Originally, they wanted to have the outcome of their deliberations by the end of the year, but now discussions are said to extend into February. The next meeting, which should take into account the results of the lawyers' analysis, is scheduled for January 17.
    The lawyers have not yet dealt with the legality of the competition. However, they indicated that the library could be located elsewhere in Prague than the originally selected site in Letná, or that architectural proposals could be modified under certain conditions.
