Prague - Prague will celebrate the 650th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of Charles Bridge in July. The city hall wants to prepare reconstructions of historical events, concerts, and medieval markets for visitors. The festivities will take place from July 6 to 9, councilor Milan Richter told reporters today.
"The celebrations will commemorate the history of the bridge, but they will also be one of the main attractions of this year's tourist season," Richter said. Prague residents can look forward to knight tournaments, medieval military camps, demonstrations of production craftsmanship, and medieval music. The city hall will also organize a historical procession from the Old Town Square to Charles Bridge, where Emperor Charles IV will once again lay the foundation stone. Initially, it was planned to also reconstruct the first Prague defenestration. However, according to Richter, the councilors ultimately did not approve it since it doesn't have much connection to the bridge.
The residents of the capital and tourists can come to see concerts that will take place on a floating stage on the Vltava River. The audience will watch from the bridge and the shore. The councilors are planning concerts of both popular and classical music.
The city hall also wants to publish a book about Charles Bridge. The Czech National Bank will mint gold commemorative coins and platinum medals. Special stamps for the anniversary will also be available for purchase at the post office.
"Prominent individuals visiting Prague during the celebrations will receive commemorative boxes containing original stones from the foundations of the eighth bridge pillar of Charles Bridge along with a certificate of origin," said the councilor. The city hall wants to invite representatives from partner cities to the celebrations. One of the invited guests should also be former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
Initially, the city hall estimated that the celebrations would cost 11 million crowns. However, the original budget will likely be reduced. The city hall will announce tenders for companies that will prepare the proposed scenario.
