Prague - Detectives from the anti-corruption unit have filed a proposal for the indictment of former CEO of Central Group Aleš Novotný and his two associates due to tax fraud. Between 2004 and 2010, they allegedly deliberately inserted false invoices into the company's accounting and deprived the state of nearly 180 million crowns. If convicted, they face up to ten years behind bars. This was announced today by Jaroslav Ibehej, spokesman for the police presidium.
The accused allegedly created about 700 fictitious invoices. "This conduct resulted in a tax shortfall totaling nearly 177 million crowns and an attempt to evade tax of nearly 20 million crowns. The case was sent to the High Public Prosecutor's Office in Prague with a proposal for indictment," said Ibehej.
The police investigated the case for more than a year and a half. The year before last, in November, they conducted a raid in the company's offices and seized its accounting records. Last November, they indicted Novotný and four others for tax fraud. The court then placed the former CEO of Central Group in custody. The chairman of the board and majority owner of the company, Dušan Kunovský, previously described the investigation and the indictment as nonsensical. The company also stated that Novotný's detention was unconventional and inadequate.
After last year's arrest, the police proposed sending four accused individuals to custody, but the court only granted this for Novotný. The others are under the supervision of a probation officer based on a court decision; they had to give an undertaking to the court and surrender their travel documents.
Central Group, with a share capital of 2.7 billion crowns, is one of the leaders of the domestic residential market. The company has already sold around 8,000 apartments, family houses, and plots, primarily in Prague and the surrounding area. Its biggest competitors are the companies Finep, Ekospol, and Skanska.
