Prague - According to unions, approximately 40,000 people will lose their jobs in construction this year. The reason is, among other things, the ongoing decrease in contracts and the government's austerity measures. This was stated today by its chairman Stanislav Antoniv at the opening of the sixth congress of the Construction Trade Union. According to the Union of Entrepreneurs in Construction, around 450,000 people work in the sector. The head of the construction unions criticized the government’s austerity measures in his opening speech. These also affected the construction of transport infrastructure or support for the renovation of apartment buildings. "I am very sorry that the government did not adopt the short-term anti-crisis measures agreed upon with previous governments and partners,” noted Antoniv. According to the latest figures from the Czech Statistical Office, the average number of employees (excluding agency workers) in large companies with 50 or more employees increased year-on-year by 0.7 percent in November 2010. Their average monthly nominal wage increased year-on-year by 3.5 percent to 33,180 CZK.
