Art competition for the design of a sculpture dedicated to
the poet, writer, and translator Jan Skácel
PhDr. Viera Rusinková and Mgr. Jaroslav Hamža
Department of Culture of the City Hall of Brno Dominikánské náměstí 3 601 67 Brno
Dear Sir/Madam,
Information has appeared in the media that the art competition for the Jan Skácel sculpture in Brno was canceled by the organizer before the jury made a decision about the results. The alleged reason was the low number and quality of the proposals.
If this information is true, we are very disappointed by the organizer's course of action. We invested an immense amount of energy and work into our proposal and we feel very positively about it. We were looking forward to a confrontation with other sculptors and architects and believed in our success.
Instead, we were met with contempt for our work and very unethical behavior from the organizer, who announced their decision to cancel the competition in the media without bothering to inform the participants or adequately justify their decision. The argument that 16 proposals are too few does not hold up, nor does the alternative reason that there was too little time for the competition – the affected authors should have raised their concerns much earlier, rather than a month after the submission deadline!!! A new competition is to be announced – but where is the guarantee that it will not be canceled as well? Are the organizers really convinced that repeating the competition will help find the best proposal, or are there completely different interests behind the cancellation? The current situation only contributes to various speculations and unfortunately confirms Brno's reputation as a city incapable of properly concluding even a single art competition.
We thus ask you to immediately begin proceeding according to the competition conditions, paragraphs 19 and 20, which obligate you to the following steps:
— to create a written protocol of the jury regarding the reasons for the cancellation of the competition and send it to all participants, as well as publish it in the media — to arrange compensation for all participating competitors — to return all competition proposals to the authors
We further consider it necessary:
— to publish all proposals to the public, so it is clear whether the decision was made solely based on quality criteria — to publish the new conditions of the competition, including information on whether the original proposal can be reused without the risk of breaching anonymity
Sincerely,
Ladislav Sorokáč Ondřej Tuček Hurbanova 1176/20, Praha 4 Modřínová 1395/24, Praha 8
