The city of Ostrava wants to complete the under-construction boathouse by the middle of next year, which it bought last year from the canoeing association Campanula. The association began building the boathouse, but after a few months faced financial problems. Ostrava has now selected a company to finish the project. This was stated by Ostrava's mayor, Petr Kajnar. There has been no work on the unfinished skeleton at the confluence of the Ostravice and Lučina rivers, close to the city center, for about a year and a half. Campanula stopped paying the construction company after receiving a lower European grant for the project than expected. Construction was then halted. "In the end, through a tripartite agreement, we reached a settlement between the city, the contractor, and Campanula," Kajnar recalled. The purchase of the construction for 6.8 million crowns was approved by city councilors last September. According to Kajnar, it is essential to complete the boathouse quickly, as there is a risk that Ostrava could lose already approved grants. "Today is August, we need to be finished by the middle of next year. That's the time frame in which this can be achieved, provided no one appeals. So let's hope it goes well. It's about 25 million from European funds that could come here and which we would otherwise lose," said the mayor. He stated that the construction company Intoza won the tender. The city hall has prepared a new project that took into account that part of the building is already prepared. The construction is planned to include spaces for storing canoeing and climbing equipment, changing rooms, social facilities, a clubhouse, and refreshments. The construction of the boathouse is part of the revitalization of the Ostravice River in the center of the regional city. This includes making several kilometers of the watercourse navigable for recreational boating. The project also includes the construction of bike paths and sunbathing areas on the banks of the river, a substantial part of which is already completed.
