Prague - The city-owned company Výstaviště Praha has canceled the public contract for the reconstruction of Marold's panorama of the battle at Lipany. The reason is the lack of funds for investments this year. Tomáš Hübl, the chairman of the company's board, announced this to ČTK today. The exhibition planned to repair the interior spaces or modernize the technical equipment. Painter Luděk Marold created the panorama of the battle at Lipany between 1897 and 1898.
"The tender for the contractor of the reconstruction works for the Marold panorama building has been suspended due to lower investments from the sole shareholder, the City of Prague, for this year. Unfortunately, Výstaviště Praha did not receive sufficient economic means within the budget policy for the year 2024 to fulfill this public contract," Hübl stated. As soon as the company has enough funds for investments, it will repair the monument.
The exhibition in Bubenec wanted to invest an estimated seven million crowns in the repairs. The exact amount would come from the results of the tender. The planned construction modifications would include the interior and entrance areas, repair of the electrical installation, addition of cooling or blackout of the exhibition space, and restoration of the ground floor facade. The panorama was to be revitalized with multimedia elements that would present the painting to viewers and highlight its interesting features. It would also bring the story of Luděk Marold closer and explain why he chose the battle at Lipany specifically.
Marold's panorama is 11 meters high and 95 meters wide and depicts the battle between the troops of Catholics and moderate Hussites against Hussite radicals, which took place in 1434. It is exhibited in a circular pavilion at the Exhibition Grounds. The work was originally intended for an architecture and engineering exhibition in 1898.
