Olomouc – The Olomouc City Hall wants to negotiate with the owners of the former municipal slaughterhouse building at the market in the outskirts of the historic city center about its further use, to become a functional part of the currently renovated market. CTK was informed by Mayor Miroslav Žbánek (ANO). This year, after an unsuccessful concession procedure for its long-term management, the operation of the municipal market in Olomouc was taken over by the city organization Výstaviště Flora, which has already begun extensive modifications of this area. The municipal market was in a dilapidated state.
According to Žbánek, it would be appropriate to incorporate the building of the municipal slaughterhouse into the new form of the municipal market space. However, the city is not the owner, so it has little influence on the building's use. In the past, various shops or a gaming hall operated in the municipal slaughterhouse building. The property is currently owned by two individuals. "We know that the original intention of the building owner was to sell it, but now he has withdrawn it from sale. We expect to meet with him again and ask what his intention is for this building. If we can find common ground regarding the conceptual use of this entire area, it would, of course, be the best," the mayor stated.
The city hall wants to create a place in the municipal market where Olomouc residents can meet on various occasions. "Whether of a community nature, at cultural events, or during leisure time," said Žbánek. Výstaviště Flora has already started making improvements to the space, old stalls have been demolished. Repairs to concrete tables are prepared, new trash cans will be installed, and the market area will be leveled. There are also plans for modernizing public toilets and separating the market area from the adjacent parking lot.
Regular markets will again take place at the municipal market, where people can buy mainly fruits and vegetables from small growers. Výstaviště Flora will also add Farmers' Markets, which it previously organized on its premises. "The farmers' markets that we held around Pavilion A were very popular with visitors, so we definitely want to implement them again this year. The market space we are now managing offers an excellent solution. During this first season ahead of us, we will thoroughly map everything to plan a longer-term use of the space," said the director of Výstaviště Flora, Eva Fuglíčková.
Last December, the Olomouc City Hall canceled the concession procedure for the operator of the municipal market. "Only one applicant submitted a proposal in the process. However, the material submitted by him did not contain any evaluable data at all, so it had to be excluded," said the spokesperson of the magistrate, Michal Folta. Discussions about the renewal and future form of the municipal market in Olomouc have been ongoing for years. According to the original plan of the councilors, a commercial and social center, the Palace Morava, was to be created at the market, which borders the city's heritage reservation. However, a wave of resistance arose against the construction. The city’s leadership stepped back from this plan.
