KARLOVY VARY - The new owner of the Karlovy Vary Spa VI, known as the Sluneční Lázně, wants to demolish them. The long-unused complex was recently acquired from the Karlovy Vary spa company Imperial by Milan Slavík Trade Company. Shortly thereafter, they requested demolition permission from the Karlovy Vary building authority, writes today's Karlovarské noviny (KN).
However, there is a wave of resistance in the city against the plan to demolish the building, even within the magistrate. They cannot directly influence the building authority's decision. "We do not like the new owner's plan at all. Although it is not a historical monument, the Sluneční Lázně is a beautiful example of functionalist architecture. And this is despite the fact that previous modifications have harmed them greatly," said Deputy Mayor Petr Keřka to KN. The city leadership would like to persuade the owner to reconsider their demolition plans.
If the investor receives permission from the building authority for the demolition of the Sluneční Lázně, they plan to build a seven-story residential building in its place, KN further writes. "We believe in common sense. We would be very unhappy if the demolition of the Sluneční Lázně was decided based on a single assessment. Karlovy Vary has already lost several significant buildings in the past," said historian and archaeologist, chairman of the Club for Beautiful Karlovy Vary, Jiří Klsák.
