Litomyšl – The second courtyard of the Litomyšl Castle is preparing for the start of the Smetanova Litomyšl music festival. The organizers had a new roof and space for musicians created according to the design by architect Josef Pleskot. This has resulted in a comfortable space for both musicians and spectators, which also highlights the frescoes and the beauty of the Renaissance castle listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Smetanova Litomyšl festival begins on June 14 and will last until July 6. It will offer nearly 50 performances, including four operas.
The two-level roof can be partially folded down in good weather, supported by two massive steel towers. It is built on a concrete base beneath the castle courtyard, which was preceded by an archaeological survey. The stage is positioned higher than before, and a sub-level orchestra pit has also been created. Everything is equipped with two sets of lighting, one for the orchestra and another for stage performances. Rainwater from the roof drains through pipes into the castle's drainage system. The entire structure should be able to be assembled and disassembled in three to four weeks to avoid obstructing tours of the valuable monument.
"It's not a hall that is enclosed; it is practically an outdoor hall. It has its limitations, but thanks to the fact that our ancestors left us something as wonderful as the castle, its arcades, and the entire configuration of the castle square measuring 30 by 30 meters, we can say that in terms of acoustic and architectural parameters, we will have probably the most beautiful hall for miles around," Pleskot said.
The auditorium has also undergone partial transformation. Compared to the previous arrangement, it is divided by an aisle, which allows for easier access, and the seats are covered with textile covers. The current capacity when arranged for a large orchestra is 800 seats, with an additional 300 to 400 spectators possible on the castle's arcades and extended space during some performances. Next year, further changes are expected for the auditorium, which will receive a different elevation.
The new structure, lighting, tensions, and installations cost about 65 million crowns. Additional costs were incurred for the stage and orchestra pit, with more expenses for the new auditorium expected next year.
