Prague - The Golden Lane was ceremonially reopened today in the Old Town of Prague. This narrow, short lane connects Anenské náměstí with Liliová Street. It had been closed for over 60 years. The repair, costing 15 million crowns, was funded by the Prague 1 municipality and lasted since last September.
The Golden Lane is named similarly to the Golden Lane at Prague Castle. According to the municipality of the first city district, however, unlike the latter, its name was indeed derived from goldsmiths and jewelers who historically settled along the paths to the Vltava fords. Officially, though, it received its name only at the beginning of the 20th century.
The lane previously ended blindly at the technical facilities of the National Theatre in the former Dominican convent for women. The rest of the path had been closed since around 1948. The municipality repaired the pavement in the lane, and the entrances from Liliová Street and Anenské náměstí were also modified, along with the facades of the walls.
The lane will continue to be managed by the National Theatre, opening in the summer at 07:00 and closing at 22:00. In winter, the gates will be closed between 21:00 and 08:00. "Thanks to this, it could retain its exclusivity," said the director of the National Theatre, Ondřej Černý.
According to the mayor of Prague 1, Filip Dvořák, the reopening of the lane will help show tourists an authentic Prague thanks to its genius loci and will attract visitors who want to learn more than the well-known attractions. "I hope we can avoid turning it into a backdrop," Černý added, referring to the main tourist attractions overflowing with souvenirs.
During the ceremonial opening, the Archbishop of Prague, Dominik Duka, blessed the lane. He reminded that since the 14th century, the area was home to the Order of Dominican Nuns. "It was the first university for women in this country," said Duka. The convent was dissolved at the end of the 18th century by Joseph II, and later Schönfeld's printing house was established there.
