Olomouc - The third and last villa from the group of five villas on Vienna Street in Olomouc, designed by Austrian architect Jakob Gartner, has been added to the list of cultural monuments. This villa was built in the neo-Rococo style for industrialist Hans Passinger. The Ministry of Culture made the decision based on a proposal from Olomouc conservationists. The remaining two villas from the group did not succeed in their proposal to the ministry. Vlastimil Staněk from the Olomouc office of the National Heritage Institute said this today. The house with the descriptive number 640 was commissioned by Hans Passinger, whose family owned the so-called Stone Mill in Olomouc on what is now Freedom Boulevard since 1875, as well as a mill in Šternberk, which the family had owned since the second half of the 18th century. Both mills were converted to steam power at the end of the 19th century. "The work of architect Jakob Gartner built in 1898 shapes the atmosphere of Olomouc's Vienna Street and the overall urban character of the residential district of Olomouc's industrialists," said Staněk.
According to the conservationists, the house has a well-preserved representative facade, which is the richest of all the originally designed buildings. They stated that modifications had been made to the building that do not devalue the structure as a whole and can be considered evidence of the development of a residential villa. "The well-preserved neo-Rococo building featuring Art Nouveau elements is a valuable testament to the connection of historicist styles with then-modern Art Nouveau trends," added Staněk. The individual villas for Olomouc's industrialists were designed by Jakob Gartner (1861-1921), a native of Přerov of Jewish descent, who became a prominent Austrian architect and founded an architectural office in Vienna. These projects were for the most significant entrepreneurs in various styles ranging from Gothic through Renaissance to Rococo. Each structure is unique, but in the context of Vienna Street, they form a cohesive whole toward the park and are in relatively good condition. Earlier, the villa on Vienna Street built for entrepreneur Eduard Hamburger and the villa of Wilhelm Briesse, who was involved in brewing, were added to the list of monuments. According to Staněk, the villas of Joseph Bermann and Ignác Briesse were not declared cultural monuments by the Ministry of Culture due to the minimal authenticity of the interiors and alterations made to the building's mass.
