The second year of the international dance improvisation festival focused on movement in the city and the dance interpretation of architectural space.

August 18 – 24, 2014 in Brno

During the week-long festival, there will be two five-day workshops /Legakis, Sedlačková/, one full-day workshop /Lefkowitz, Laporte, Dearil/, and a final performance by the participants of Legakis's workshop.

The Move the City festival is held for the second year, and its aim is to explore the architectural space through dance, movement, and bodily experience. The individual instructors of the planned workshops will focus on different approaches to understanding dance improvisation in connection with architecture and the city. They will address topics such as the perception of urban space through bodily sensitivity or dynamic contrasts – group versus individual and structure versus improvisation. They will also explore body structures and their expression through movement or the connection of the spiritual with the physical, form with essence, and dance with the city.

The festival will also include a supplementary program consisting of lectures, screenings, discussions, performances, and dance walks through the city for the public.

Invited instructors and planned workshops:

MYRIAM LEFKOWITZ, JULIE LAPORTE, JEAN-PHILIPPE DERAIL (FR): WALK, HANDS, EYES (Brno)

A one-day workshop with the French choreographer and her dance group.
Their performance offers new possibilities for knowing and perceiving the city through dancers who become guides and co-discoverers alongside the audience.

VANGELIS LEGAKIS (GR/GB): CITY AND DANCING BODY

Vangelis works by connecting dance, chi gong, and performance with a focus on perception and experiencing oneself in new aspects. His technique is based on release, flying low, contact improvisation, choreography, and theater within collective work in a group. The workshop will take place partly in the studio and partly in public space, where on the last day a site-specific performance will be created.

ANNA SEDLAČKOVÁ (SK): BODY STORIES

Body stories – stories of the body; a workshop focused on physically exploring selected structures of the body and their expression in movement. We will work with the concept of source and support of improvised movement. Another central theme will be "seeing and being seen" as well as examining the relationship between movement and voice.

Everyone is a dancer, everyone is an architect.
