Prague - The construction of a new building at the corner of Wenceslas Square and Opletalova Street is possible according to Culture Minister Daniel Herman (KDU-ČSL). The minister cannot comment on the demolition. This comes from a review process that the Czech Press Agency has access to. There is no appeal against the ministry's decision. An administrative center is expected to be built on the site of the building, which was transformed in 1920 according to the design of architect Bohumír Kozák.

In the review process, the minister overturned last year's decision, which opposed both the demolition of the building and the new construction. He thus confirmed part of a six-year-old decision by Prague's heritage protectors regarding the location of the new building. The construction department of Prague 1 must grant the demolition permit, the city's decision to demolish from 2013 was annulled by the city hall two years ago and returned for re-evaluation.

The dispute over the corner building has been ongoing for many years. It revolves around the city hall's decision from 2010, which approved the demolition and new construction. Participants in the proceedings appealed against it in 2011, but the investor filed an appeal, and the then-Culture Minister Jiří Besser confirmed Prague's decision. His successor Alena Hanáková (both from TOP 09 and STAN) definitively rejected the heritage protection of the building, which was another step toward demolition.

By signing the current result of the review process, Minister Herman withdrew last February’s decision in which the ministry first opposed the demolition. "It definitely cannot be said that the minister permitted the demolition, even though, as a result of the decision, the city hall’s approval has somehow been 'revived'," said ministry spokesperson Simona Cigánková. The owner of the building, Flow East, has previously stated that it will not begin demolition until it has construction permission for the new building.

The company has owned the building since 1994. The project costs, including the purchase of the land and building, reportedly reach a billion crowns; precisely the fears of potential claims for compensation for wasted investment have been repeatedly cited by the ministry as a reason for not declaring the building a cultural monument.
