On Wednesday, June 26, an event titled Positive Intervention will take place at the Sokol cinema, which is part of the City Interventions Kladno project. During the event, the results of a public vote on the positives and negatives of public spaces in Kladno will be presented. There is also a rich accompanying program including screenings and theatrical performances. The Sokol cinema is reopening after a long seven years thanks to a suggestion from architects of the organizing association KLAD-ON/OFF.
The program will begin at one o'clock in the afternoon with a guided tour of the city, primarily intended for professionals. This should help architects or university students in looking for possible transformations of the most problematic places in Kladno. The development of projects to transform specific locations will be the next stage of the entire project.
At four in the afternoon, there will be screenings of short films about the city and public space, as well as a program on the street in front of the cinema. The organizers are significantly assisted by students from the nearby Kladno Gymnasium, who are part of the Active Kladno project.
In the evening, a presentation of the results of the public vote and an open discussion are planned, which will include figures such as city architect František Müller and author of the Strategic Development Plan for Kladno, Tomáš Gremlica. The entire program will conclude with a performance by the V.A.D. Theater, titled A Fairy Tale About Kladno, starting at eight o'clock.
“The Sokol cinema is an important cultural space that has been closed for a long time. This is related to the poor state of its surroundings and the fact that the city center is not functioning as it should,” says one of the organizers of City Interventions Kladno, architect Ondřej Rys. “Wednesday's program is essentially a trial city intervention. We want to show that the pedestrian zone should continue to the Svobody Square and that various activities can be done on the street – sitting with friends, sports, singing, and so on.”
From April to early June, the residents of Kladno had the opportunity to vote on their feelings about the quality of public space through a map at the Central Bohemian Scientific Library or via special stickers. The organizers received over 120 suggestions this way. The most frequently negatively rated places in Kladno included the non-functional main avenue, the surroundings of Baumax, and the bus station. On the other hand, positive feedback was received for places such as the Sletiště or the Sítenské valley.
The idea of the “city interventions” project originated in Bratislava in 2007. Matúš Vallo and Oliver Sadovský (Vallo Sadovsky Architects) brought their concept of civic-professional initiative to life: they decided not to wait for external assignments and invited several of their colleagues and architectural studios to first choose an architecturally or urbanistically problematic public place in the broader center of Bratislava and then propose – without expecting any fee – a better solution for it. The project met with unprecedented response from the public and the authors themselves, who demonstrated their sensitivity to creating an urban environment with many very good proposals. In the Czech Republic, the event has so far successfully taken place in Prague and Brno, and concurrently with Kladno, it is being held in Jablonec nad Nisou.
