Magdalena Havlová and Miroslav Šik: Our House - Book Presentation

What has Czech architecture of rental housing been, is, and hopefully will be? How to write about architecture? And can a PhD in architecture help change anything? These and other questions are raised by architect Magdalena Havlová in her publication “Náš Dům. Accessible Housing Architecture”, which she will present in a public discussion alongside architect Miroslav Šik. In this personal yet practical view on typologies of urban and cooperative apartment buildings, she allows readers to glimpse the thinking of architects through text and image, comments on historical and contemporary context, and offers possibilities for restoring the quality and former glory of rental housing.

The event is organized in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.

The book Náš Dům is a record and result of the process of exploring Czech architecture of rental housing, which the author engaged in from 2018 to 2022 as part of her doctoral studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Its aim is to provide a personal and coherent (though far from complete) view on typologies of urban and cooperative apartment buildings as one of the possible and functional tools to address housing accessibility. Through both text and image, it offers insight into the thinking of architects, comments on historical and contemporary context, and presents options for restoring the quality and bygone glory of rental housing.
