LOUNY - This year, Louny will invest 13.6 million crowns in the construction of local roads and public sections of water and sewage connections in the new residential area of Zahradní město. Work on building roads, sidewalks, parks, and engineering networks in the area of the former barracks began two years ago and will be completed next year, said Louny Mayor Jan Kerner to reporters today.

In 2007, the city will allocate 11 million crowns for the preparation of the district, bringing the total costs to approximately 70 million crowns. The city hall intends to recover the funds by selling the former military facilities and the land for future family homes. So far, four buildings and nine building plots have been sold for more than 30 million crowns.
According to Kerner, the promotion of the new district will be aided by the website www.zahradni-mesto.cz, which the city has established with the help of a professional company in recent days. The city hall has also established cooperation with five real estate agencies that have committed to providing as much information as possible about housing opportunities in the attractive part of Louny. "Nine sold plots is perhaps not a significant success, but I consider it a start. I anticipate that when the district takes shape, including the roads and greenery, the number of genuine interested parties will significantly increase," he stated.
The military property, with an accounting value of 177 million crowns, was acquired by the city through a gratuitous transfer. The urban planning studies for Zahradní město envision the construction of up to 300 housing units in multi-story and family homes. The district is expected to blend seamlessly with the surroundings and become a quiet zone.
