Brno - People in Brno can adopt the graves of significant individuals that no one cares for. Among them are, for example, painters and writers. The aim is to engage the public in caring for memorials and thus prevent their deterioration. This was stated in a press release by the Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL).

"Every person deserves a dignified memorial that will remain for future generations. Often, it is a gravestone that their loved ones take care of. However, many significant Czechs and Moravians do not have such luck. The grave adoption project is a way to preserve their memory," said Hladík.

Grave adoption is free of charge, but the city expects that the adopter will take care of the grave. Additionally, a neglected grave can find new use through adoption, as some of them may be available for reburial. However, the memory of the significant individual must be preserved.

"Graves of Brno personalities can be adopted, including the names of painters, sculptors, writers, as well as clergy or teachers," said Hladík.

According to him, there will be dozens of graves available for adoption. Currently, two can be adopted, namely the grave of Roman Catholic priest Vladimír Boks and the grave of historian Jaroslav Dřímal. Interested parties can find a regularly updated list of available graves on the webpage of the Cemetery Administration of the City of Brno.
