Liberec - The Technical University of Liberec is launching a new doctoral program focused on architecture and urban planning. The field was inspired by similar programs at prestigious European schools in Milan, London, Helsinki, and Kent, according to experts from the Faculty of Art and Architecture in Liberec. Applications for the new program can be submitted until September 16, said university spokesperson Radek Pirkl today.
The goal is to bring an interdisciplinary perspective into architecture and urban planning and to incorporate the latest information and design technologies. This is reflected in the composition of the subjects. "Humanities-oriented subjects will be supplemented by, for example, adaptive architecture, informed architectural design, digital forms of design, or architecture - new materials," said program guarantor Jiří Buček.
In addition to technology-oriented disciplines, the study will also offer topics and subjects related to designing contemporary settlements: public space in urban contexts, selected problems of social sciences from the perspective of architecture and urbanism, passive architecture and technologies for sustainable development, or the theory of space and place in art and architecture.
The Faculty of Art and Architecture was established in December 1994 and is one of the seven faculties of the Technical University of Liberec. In connection with the new doctoral program, it is preparing the construction of new facilities for study and research tasks. "In the spring, we will begin the construction of a laboratory project for doctoral students, fully equipped not only for the use of digital technologies but also for experiments with materials such as wood, metal, or concrete. Students will be able to move in as early as spring 2022," said the faculty dean Osamu Okamura.
