Liberec - The Technical University of Liberec is preparing one of the largest investment projects in recent years - the reconstruction of the dormitories in Harcov. The complex is expected to accommodate participants of the World Championship in classical skiing, which will take place in Liberec in 2009. The state has therefore promised a grant of 280 million Czech crowns for the reconstruction of the dormitories and the expansion of facilities. The construction will be carried out by the Liberec construction company Syner, which won the public tender, said Rector Vojtěch Konopa to ČTK today. According to Konopa, five companies competed for the contract. Syner won due to the lowest bid price. The university has already invested over 50 million crowns from the state budget and its own resources in the repair of dormitories built in the 1980s in the past five years. However, only about a quarter of the work is completed. The work, which was dependent on the financial capabilities of the university, progressed slowly. The state grant will significantly accelerate the process. The 280 million crown grant will allow a complete replacement of windows and core materials within two years. The repair of elevators will be completed, and the dormitories will receive new floors and equipment. "The contract also includes the reconstruction of the student club Výměník and the repair of communication, including the construction of a turnaround for city public transport buses and the expansion of parking spaces in the dormitory complex," said university spokesperson Jaroslava Kočárková to ČTK. According to the bursar Vladimír Stach, the agreement on accommodation for athletes, which the university made with the organizers of the championship, is beneficial, even though the championship will mean certain restrictions for students - during its duration, they will have to vacate the dormitories. However, the Technical University will gain a modern accommodation complex that will meet even the strict requirements of the FIS. The state should invest nearly one billion crowns in the preparation of the skiing championship, which will take place in Liberec in 2009. Of this, 569 million is expected to be sent by the ministries of finance, transport, education, and regional development, and additional funds will come from other levels of the state budget. Former finance minister Bohuslav Sobotka promised during his visit to Liberec in April that he would release 87 million crowns for preparations this year, while nearly 58 million will support the preparations from the Liberec region.
