PRAGUE - Due to the planned construction of a new building for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) in Hagibor, Prague 10, the capital city is preparing a change to the zoning plan. The proposal for initiating the change was approved by the council today. The radio station will move from the building of the former Federal Assembly near Wenceslas Square. The building in Hagibor will be constructed for them by Orco Property Group. Some council members welcome the proposal, claiming that the relocation of the station will improve traffic in the upper part of Wenceslas Square. The change to the zoning plan concerns approximately half a hectare of parcels. Currently, the land is designated as a reserve for sports purposes. Thanks to the construction of the office building, new parking spaces will be created on Hollar Square. The idea of relocating the radio station further from the city center began to be considered after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington in September 2001. Since then, the building of the former Federal Assembly has been guarded, separated from the surroundings by concrete barriers. The move of the station is planned for the end of 2007.
