Zlín - The swimming pool being built by the Zlín city hall in the largest housing estate, Jižní Svahy, will open in a year. In addition to the original plan, the complex will also include a professional mini-golf course. The construction, costing 80 million crowns excluding VAT, will be completed this autumn; however, it would be nonsense to fill it with water in September or October and drain it two weeks later, said councilor Karel Jankovič to journalists today. The swimming pool will be built on land between the Vyhlídka restaurant and the Church of the Virgin Mary Help of Christians. Construction work will begin in mid-May. Before this, trees will be cut down, stumps removed, and continuous greenery and invasive species cleared. The sports complex will offer visitors a twenty-five meter pool, which schools can use to meet educational standards, and a smaller heated water area. This way, the pool will serve people even on less warm days. There will be terraces for sunbathing, water attractions, facilities for visitors, and mini-golf. The mini-golf course is being prepared by the city hall in cooperation with a professional club. The nearest facility where professional tournaments can be held is in Bystřice pod Hostýnem, which is 30 kilometers away. During the pool's operation, the mini-golf will serve exclusively the public. In recent months, the city hall has been criticized for choosing to build a swimming pool instead of a modern water park. Jankovič pointed out today that the city never considered constructing an entire complex of water attractions. There are reportedly several reasons. "A water park is not a place where people go to swim. The entry fee is 1500 crowns. Who would go there after work, even for half the price, to swim? We were interested in something else. Zlín has always leaned more towards swimming, whether for exercise, sport, or baby swimming," noted the councilor. He also reminded that soon there will be two water parks in the Zlín region - one already widely visited for several years is in Uherský Brod, and another is being built by the Uherský Hradiště city hall. "In our opinion, the Hradiště water park will completely wipe out the Brod one because it will be more modern. Three water parks are enough for the whole of Moravia because families go there as a pilgrimage site where they spend the whole day," Jankovič added. Another reason is also the money, as building a water park is three times more expensive than building a swimming pool. The city hall intends to finance the swimming pool in the largest Zlín housing estate from its own resources. It will use funds from a half-billion crown loan taken last year. The loan is intended for completing the Congress Center, modernizing the Youth Stadium, and insulating selected primary school buildings.
