Olomouc - From a great distance, the Church of Cyril and Methodius in Olomouc can be seen at night thanks to its new lighting, which is a 65-meter-high landmark in the outskirts of Hejčín. The ceremonial lighting of the church cost the city 164,000 crowns, Olomouc's Deputy Mayor Ladislav Šnevajs (KDU-ČSL) told ČTK today.

"The night panorama of Olomouc is once again a bit more beautiful and richer. The city has gained another lovely symbol. I believe it will be appreciated not only by those arriving in evening Olomouc from the direction of Hradec Králové and Mohelnice," Šnevajs stated.

The illumination of the monument in Hejčín, built in the style of neoclassically modern architecture, is intended to emphasize the dominant position of the church in this part of Olomouc, according to Šnevajs. Thanks to the lights of the floodlights, the balanced modern architecture of the church will stand out, Šnevajs noted.

At the light test that preceded the final appearance of the church’s lighting, there were representatives of heritage protection, the local council, the parish administrator, and residents of the surrounding houses. "I appreciate that consensus was achieved among all the participants," Šnevajs added.

The Church of Cyril and Methodius in Hejčín was built between 1929 and 1932 according to the design of architect and builder Josef Šálek. The simple exterior of the church contrasts with the rich decoration inside. In the church crypt lies the tomb of Archbishop Leopold Prečan.
