Brno - South Moravian representatives want the R43 road from Brno to the north to follow the originally planned route through the Brno housing estate of Bystrc. Today, they approved a resolution recommending not to continue working on the Boskovická Brázda variant. The route allegedly does not have the desired traffic effect. Regional councilor Anna Procházková told ČTK today that the goal is for the Czech Republic to secure funding for construction from European Union funds.
"If the route is stabilized and not questioned, then there is a greater chance of obtaining funds from the operational program for transport," she said. The decision is also said to be a signal from the regional council towards the municipalities along the road's route and to the authorities.
Whether the council's decision will expedite anything in the preparation for building the road, which is one of the most controversial transport constructions in the region, the councilor could not estimate. She only said that if experts complete the environmental impact assessment at the beginning of next year and the Ministry of the Environment issues an opinion on the construction, the Directorate of Roads and Highways will be able to prepare documents for the land-use decision. In that case, they will reportedly be able to ask the European Commission to include R43 in the Operational Program for Transport.
The decision was opposed by representatives from the Green party and some communists. Mojmír Vlašín (SZ) described it as disgraceful in that the council is unlawfully interfering with the preparation of land use plans for municipalities. According to him, the council's decision "can influence and probably will influence the drafters of the land-use plan." "Because they will think, if I assess this objectively and the Boskovická Brázda variant comes out as better, then I won’t get paid or I’ll get paid less," Vlašín said.
The R43 road is one of the most controversial planned constructions in South Moravia. Numerous civic associations in Brno protest against its route through Bystrc, while the mayors of the local municipalities oppose the Boskovická Brázda route. Conversely, another group of residents in the region is calling for the construction - the I/43 road from Brno to Svitavy, which R43 aims to relieve, is insufficient for the traffic, and, for example, several-kilometer traffic jams often form before roundabouts.
