Prague - Investments of Czech households in housing are rather decided by women, while men more often pay for them. This results from a survey conducted by the STEM/MARK agency.
Investments in housing are among the largest expenses that most people decide on in their personal lives. Therefore, according to the portal, neither men nor women wanted to admit too much in the survey that one group makes decisions about housing while the other pays for it. About 60 percent of them indicated that the decision-making is shared. However, more detailed questioning revealed that it is mainly women who decide on housing expenses, while men tend to pay the bills more often.
The leading role of women in deciding on investments in housing can be inferred, according to the editor-in-chief of the portal, Petr Zámečník, from the question of whether it is the partner or the partner that decides on these investments in the household. In this case, 13.3 percent of men admitted that their partner takes the lead, while only 2.8 percent of surveyed women indicated the same about their partner.
Regarding the payment of housing expenses, the main source for financing housing in families is the man's account. In the STEM/MARK survey, 68 percent of men identified themselves as the main payers of housing expenses, while 21.6 percent named their partner. In contrast, women identified themselves as the main payers of housing investments in 42.1 percent of cases, and their partner in 42.7 percent of cases.
"In practice, it is often men who more readily yield to the opinion of their wife or girlfriend during joint discussions about housing investment. For example, choosing between two apartments or selecting the mortgage repayment period is usually not subjectively as important a life decision for them as it is for women. Therefore, they leave the final decision to their wives. With a bit of exaggeration, one could summarize this practice by saying that although men do not decide about housing, they pay for it," said financial advisor Filip Zadražil.
"As a woman, I certainly do not think that the female role in deciding on housing investments is fundamentally dominant. However, in terms of paying for these investments, the research results align with practical experiences. One of the reasons often cited is family planning," added financial advisor Leona Lemonová. According to her, clients realize that during parental leave, women's incomes significantly decrease, and therefore they choose to designate the man as the main payer of these investments.
