Hradec Králové - The city of Hradec Králové will demolish the dilapidated building of the former tannery from the 19th century in the Kukleny district. Workers will carefully dismantle the factory building made of brick by hand, so that the city can use the bricks and other materials in the future for new constructions or repairs of other buildings. Only the chimney will remain from the factory complex, said the city hall spokesperson Kateřina Rohlíčková today.
The demolition, which the city decided on last year, is expected to start at the turn of October and November and finish in early summer 2023. The city will pay 1.5 million crowns excluding tax for the demolition. As early as 2014, the city had the clock tower removed from the factory building and stored at the airport for future use.
The city plans to utilize the area of the former tannery. "We have a study that includes several proposals for solutions for this area. A new Kukleny Square could be created here. Its part could then be a new building that will contain historical elements of the old tannery and will serve the locals for social and cultural purposes,” said the city’s chief architect Petr Brůna.
In the past, the city considered building a social housing facility for seniors at the site of the dilapidated tannery. About 15 years ago, the developer company Eube wanted to convert the tannery into a commercial center and luxury loft apartments. However, Eube went bankrupt in 2010, and the project was abandoned.
