Hradec Králové – The City Hall of Hradec Králové has selected a designer for the reconstruction of Kubištovy Sady near the historical center, located between the regional court, the Slavia sports hall, and the former institution for the deaf and mute. The park covers an area of 2.4 hectares and was created between 1905 and 1907. It is situated in a heritage-protected part of the city, said city hall spokesperson Kateřina Šmídová.
The project, costing 650,000 crowns without VAT and all necessary permits, should be available to the city in approximately 14 months. The actual reconstruction of the park could begin in 2023. Initially, the city hall intended for the park's reconstruction to start this year. However, everything was delayed by the repeated tender process for the designer and also by issues caused by the COVID pandemic.
The gardens are set to undergo changes after more than 100 years. The plans include planting new greenery, adjusting avenues and paths, and installing new lighting and furniture. In the new version of the park, the city hall also wants to highlight the so-called Emperor's Road, lined with trees from 1867, which is hidden within the gardens. The city hall expects that people will visit the gardens more after the renovation.
The Emperor's Road began at Pospíšilova Street and passed through Kubištovy Sady towards the old hospital. "As part of the revitalization, its route will be restored, and a row of trees will be added alongside it. In addition, an educational presentation about the history of the path will be included," said Jan Falta, head of the heritage department.
The last major renovation of the city gardens took place from 2012 to 2013 when the city spent 52 million crowns without VAT to repair Šimkovy Sady near the historical center. The reconstruction of the park included dredging the pond, rebuilding the original rotunda, and constructing new paths and landscaping.
This year, the city hall completed the repair of the area near the winter stadium in the city center. The reconstruction cost 15.8 million crowns. In the area where the main entrance to Jiráskovy Sady is located, along with the Art Nouveau hydroelectric power station Hučák and the regional office building, builders completed and repaired sidewalks and bike paths, and installed new benches and bike racks.
