Brno - The location of the future joint seat of the Supreme Court (NS) and the Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office (NSZ) in Brno remains unclear. The chairwoman of the NS, Iva Brožová, wishes for a location in the city center, comparable to the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Administrative Court, and hopes that a decision will be made within the term of the current government. According to the Brno city council, both institutions could be located in the so-called Southern Center.
The project, despite long-term negotiations, is still at the beginning in many respects. The leadership of the economic section of the Ministry of Justice, which will address the relocation, has been taken over by the new deputy Miroslav Zábranský since January. He is now becoming familiar with the situation in detail. He wants the most significant judicial bodies to have a dignified and sufficiently capacious seat. "Resolving this matter is considered one of his priorities," said the office's spokesperson, Kateřina Hrochová. The ministry did not respond to a request for an estimate of costs.
In the past, considerations included placing the NS in a military complex in Černá Pole or possibly in Pisárky. However, none of these locations is situated in the center, unlike another considered plot of land between Benešova Street and Koliště behind the old bus station. This land does not belong to the city and would likely need to be purchased. A private investor wanted to build there, but the project has already been stagnating for years.
Brožová does not want to confirm the preferred location so as not to influence the negotiations. She only stated that it is an undeveloped brownfield in the city center. The NS is currently located on Burešová Street in a building of a former pension institution, which is not typewise suitable for the needs of justice, according to Brožová, and it is neither very representative nor provides enough space for the court.
According to the deputy mayor of Brno, Martin Ander (SZ), the city would like to see the Supreme Court, for example, in the Southern Center, in the area around Opuštěná Street, thus near the judicial palace, where the City Court of Brno and the public prosecutor's office are located. Similar institutions can help develop the Southern Center, Ander said. In the historic center itself, the city does not have suitable plots of land in its possession, noted Ander.
The NSZ supports the plan for a joint seat. It is logical for both institutions to work in one building, said the head of prosecutors Pavel Zeman via his spokesperson to ČTK. The NSZ is currently located on Jezuitská Street and rents additional spaces.
