Fuchs' Všechovice Cemetery is awaiting reconstruction

Všechovice (Přerovsko) - The cemetery in Všechovice in the Přerov region has been declared a cultural monument by the Ministry of Culture at the proposal of Olomouc heritage experts. The mayor of the municipality, Radovan Mikuš, told ČTK that this step could help in obtaining a grant for its renovation. The cemetery is the work of the significant functionalist architect, a leading figure of the Czech interwar avant-garde, Bohuslav Fuchs (1895 to 1972). It is also the final resting place of his parents.
"The monument is not the entire cemetery, only its mortuary, the family tomb of the Fuchs family, and the cemetery wall. It is precisely the wall that needs the most repair," said the mayor. He acknowledged that being listed as a monument is another recognition of Fuchs's work and a commitment for the municipality to care even more about his legacy.
Many works of the Všechovice native are located in Brno, where he is also buried. Most of them are in Central Moravia, especially around Bystřice pod Hostýnem. The Všechovice cemetery is one of Fuchs's early works from the 1920s.
"The cemetery represents an exceptionally well-preserved, authentic whole of its kind. It was designed a year after the revolutionary Brno Zeman café, which was demolished in the 1960s and rebuilt in the 1990s," stated Martina Mertová from the Olomouc branch of the National Heritage Institute.
The heritage-protected cemetery wall with three gates, as well as the mortuary, are also considered structurally compromised by heritage experts and need sensitive reconstruction. The mayor said that the municipality could begin repairs in two years at the earliest. The reconstruction of the elementary school has priority.
