The Faculty of Architecture CTU in Prague invites all interested parties to apply for the doctoral study program until the end of May 2015. Applicants can choose from an attractive offer of nearly seventy announced research topics.
The doctoral study program is focused on scientific research and independent creative activity in the area of research or development. The standard duration of doctoral studies is 4 years. The studies are officially concluded with a state doctoral examination and the defense of the dissertation thesis. Graduates of the doctoral program are awarded the academic title "doctor" (abbreviated as "Ph.D.", indicated after the name).
Students of the doctoral study program at the FA CTU have access to the advantages of the largest technical university in the Czech Republic. They have the opportunity to publish and participate in significant international conferences as well as domestic events and workshops, or attend lecture series by top foreign architects and professionals from related fields. Above all, they can engage in unique research activities taking place at the workplaces of the Faculty of Architecture CTU in Prague.
As part of the Operational Program Prague - Adaptability (OP PA), there has been a deepening of international cooperation within doctoral studies in recent years, thanks to which the Faculty of Architecture hosts three foreign opponents of dissertation theses this year. Following these activities, projects will also be implemented at FA CTU within the Operational Program for Science, Research, and Education (OP VVV) in the years 2014 – 2020. This program serves as an impetus to deepen cooperation on inter-faculty projects and to support excellent research workplaces. The Faculty of Architecture currently collaborates with, for example, the Faculty of Transportation, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, the Faculty of Civil Engineering, and the Klokner Institute of CTU.
In specialized workplaces, research at FA CTU has long been conducted in the areas of: • constructions in relation to current societal needs (Assoc. Prof. Ing. arch. Michal Kohout) • processes and tools of spatial planning (Assoc. Prof. Ing. arch. Jan Jehlík) • research on sustainable development of urban and regional structures (Prof. Ing. arch. Karel Maier, CSc.) • theory and history of architecture (Prof. Ing. arch. Matúš Dulla, Dr.Sc.) • advanced building materials (Assoc. Prof. Ing. arch. Miloš Florián, Ph.D.) • reliability of load-bearing structures of historical buildings (Assoc. Prof. Ing. Karel Lorenz, CSc. and Ing. Martin Pospíšil, Ph.D) • industrial heritage and architecture (PhDr. Benjamin Fragner and Assoc. Prof. Ing. arch. Petr Vorlík, Ph.D.) • modern technologies – performance and sustainability (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Henri Hubertus Achten, Ing. arch. Jiří Pavlíček, MA)
Among the significant research achievements of recent years, in which doctoral students of the Faculty of Architecture have participated, are the Silence Laboratory, part of the Czech Pavilion exhibition at EXPO 2015 in Milan, and the functional prototype of the solar house AIR HOUSE, for which the student team received third place in the worldwide Solar Decathlon 2013 competition in California.
Applicants for doctoral studies can enroll in one of four study fields: Architecture, Theory and Creation, Urbanism and Spatial Planning, Architecture, Construction and Technology, and History of Architecture and Heritage Conservation, either in full-time or combined study form. They select one of the announced research topics, which they will process under the guidance of experienced supervisors – professors and associate professors of the Faculty of Architecture.
Approximately thirty doctoral students are accepted into the doctoral study program at FA CTU each year. Applicants submit their application, including the required attachments, by May 31, 2015; the selection process will take place on June 18, 2015.
