DAYS FOR JAKUB BURSA IN VLACHOVÉ BŘEZÍ, BUŠANOVICE, AND SURROUNDING VILLAGES 19th - 21st July 2013

Join us on the penultimate weekend of July in Vlachovo Březí and Volyňsk in South Bohemia for the Day for Jakub Bursa, marking his 200th anniversary of birth on 21st July 1813.
This master mason, builder, stucco artist, and undoubtedly a folk artist was the most famous, most original, and most unique creator of brick folk architecture in South Bohemia.

He was one of the first masons to start decorating the facades of village homesteads with elaborately developed stucco decor.
Characteristic of his work was the striking semi-relief colored decoration of gables and gates, where he abundantly used flatly developed ornaments, inscriptions, and plant as well as figurative motifs compositionally connected with architectural elements such as pilasters, lesenes, cornices, volutes, etc.
He worked primarily in the villages of Jiřetice, Libotyně (both of which are village heritage reserves), Buk, Bušanovice, Dolní Nakvasovice, Dvory, Předslavice, Radhostice, Tvrzice, Vlachovo Březí. Other interesting villages worth visiting include Nahořany (VPR), Kloub, Koječín, Křtětice, Lažiště, Mahouš, Zechovice (all are village heritage zones), Čepřovice, Černěntice, Miloňovice, Modlešovice, etc.

The works that Jakub Bursa left behind still evoke respect and admiration in us even 200 years after his birth. It is now our responsibility to properly care for them and pass them on to future generations.

The center of the celebrations for Jakub Bursa and "folk baroque" is in Vlachovo Březí and Dolní Nakvasovice (the municipality of Bušanovice)

A rich program in Bursa's birthplace in Dolní Nakvasovice kicks off with pie baking and a memorial gathering on Friday evening and continues on Saturday morning.
The Saturday program on 20th July in Vlachovo Březí offers an introduction to Bursa's work along routes to surrounding villages or two exhibitions, discussions, and meetings in Vlachovo Březí. Performers will include the Netolická Pětka, the Libín folk ensemble, and others.
The program and festivities will be hosted by well-known radio and television presenter and journalist Václav Žmolík, who will also present his books Bohemia Incognita and Stories of Objects during a book signing event.
Czech Radio České Budějovice will broadcast live from 3 PM to 5 PM, providing information about Jakub Bursa’s folk buildings and the events in Vlachovo Březí and South Bohemia.

RURAL FESTIVALS IN HOLAŠOVICE 26th - 28th July 2013

Traditional folk festivals in the most famous village with uniquely preserved folk buildings, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List start on Friday, 26th July at noon with the ringing of the Holašovice village chapel and continue with full day programs on Saturday and Sunday. The main framework of the festivities is the organization of a “traditional Czech fair” featuring demonstrations of traditional and non-traditional crafts.
Included in the celebration is an exhibition Holašovice, village heritage reserve (organized by FOIBOS BOOKS) open at the Information Center.

DAYS OF FOLK ARCHITECTURE IN REGIONS, AREAS, LOCATIONS 20th and 21st July 2013

In this Year of Folk Architecture of Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia, held in honor of the 200th anniversary of Jakub Bursa’s birth, the Days of Folk Architecture will be held for the first time on 20th and 21st July.

With this year and the Days of Folk Architecture, we pay tribute to all known and unknown creators of folk buildings in all places across our republic, who have created works that are today treasures of our architectural and cultural heritage.
We encounter their folk buildings at every step. They are largely typologically diverse thanks to regional traditions, knowledge passed down from generation to generation for many decades or centuries. They have preserved a number of archaic construction solutions, unique original artistic decorations, embedded with extraordinary sensitivity into the natural environment. They can rightly be called a true treasure of folk architecture, both in terms of the number of preserved monuments and their historical and architectural value, authenticity, and integrity.
It is therefore our duty to care for them and to pass these gems on to future generations. To familiarize as many people as possible with them.
The announcement of the Year and the Days of Folk Architecture has found a response in dozens of Open Air Museums, museums, heritage reserves, and folk architecture locations. A number of exhibitions, guided tours, lectures, discussions, architectural excursions to folk buildings, and more are being organized.

Among them, we mention for example:
In South Bohemia, in addition to the mentioned Days of Jakub Bursa, there is the possibility to visit the ethnographic exhibition in the Blatná Museum in the Smrčků House in Soběslav featuring the exhibition Folk Architecture of Blata and Kozácka.
In South Moravia, for example, visit the windmill in Kuželov, the blacksmith's workshop in Těšany.
In Karlovy Vary Region, visit the Doubrava Open Air Museum with the oldest completely preserved half-timbered farmhouse from 1751.
In Hradec Králové Region, visit the Podorlicko Open Air Museum in Krňovice full of traditional village architecture, including interior furnishings.
Or the Krkonošské Museum in Vrchlabí with gable houses that are among the oldest folk buildings in the Krkonoš and the exhibition Hohenelbe/Vrchlabí - transformations of the town.
In Liberec Region, for example, visit the village museum - open-air museum in Pertoltice, whose core consists of historical buildings - a two-story half-timbered house, originally post-and-beam with a barn, known as Hasler's House. And the brick village blacksmith shop built in 1893.
In Moravian-Silesian Region, a guided tour of the folk buildings of Malá Morávka - the former fief, Schindler's barn, a visit to the private museum under the Chapel Hill, chapel, and folk cottages of Jesenický type is prepared.
It is also possible to visit the so-called Kosárna in Karlovice.
In Olomouc Region, a rich program for the Days of Folk Architecture has been prepared at the Hanácké Open Air Museum in Příkazy for eight days from 20th July 2013 to 28th July 2013.
In Pardubice Region, we can visit the famous Ensemble of Folk Buildings Vysočina with the Veselokopecký Fair.
In Plzeň Region, visitors will be welcomed by the famous Chanovice Open Air Museum with an exhibition of folk buildings. Exceptionally, the Farmstead U Matoušů in Plzeň - Bolevec will also be accessible.
In Prague, we can visit folk buildings in Ruzyně, Bohnice, or Stodůlky, or visit Trmal's Villa with exhibitions Folk Architecture of Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia, and Folk Timber Architecture of Kladské Borderland.
In Central Bohemia, we highlight a visit to the Polabí Ethnographic Museum in Přerov nad Labem with the exhibition The Charm of Folk Buildings of Central Polabí or the Museum of Folk Buildings in Kouřim and more.
In Ústí nad Labem Region, the unique ensemble of folk buildings in Zubrnice may attract visitors, with the option to also visit the local railway museum.
In Zlín Region, 19 sites invite you to visit. From the Slovácká Room in Vlčnov to the Farmer's Houses in nearby Hluk, or conversely Mikuláštík's Fief in Jasenná.
