Brno - The House of Workers in Brno-Líšeň will reopen to the public this weekend after years of neglect. After a demanding reconstruction costing 30 million crowns, only the outer walls of the valuable building from 1928 remain; the entire interior is brand new. The house is now intended to serve for theater, concerts, and social events. Jiří Janištin, the mayor of Líšeň, stated this today to the ČTK.

"We had no similar space in Líšeň. Yet we have a rich folklore, various clubs, and amateur performers. All of them can find shelter in the House of Workers," Janištin said. He added that the neglected building marred the district and just before the reconstruction began, there was a real fear it would collapse.
"The 'Dělňák' space is prepared and equipped so that both theater performances and music productions, as well as social events, balls, conferences, and the like can take place here," said Petr Veselý, the director of the Líšeň Cultural Center, regarding the future use of the building. The building will first be utilized for the weekend Líšeň festivities; on September 6, the program will include an acoustic concert by Radim Hladík and his band Blue Effect.
The main hall has a seating capacity of 300. "In our programming, we will focus primarily on events that the district is involved in. Occasionally, however, we want to organize events with a city-wide reach," said Karel Kmoch, the head of the House of Workers, to ČTK.
The House of Workers was a vibrant center of culture in Líšeň until the early 1990s. It was built from donations and contributions from citizens and was first ceremoniously opened in 1928. It was home to sports clubs as well as amateur theater groups. The building maintained its function even during the Protectorate and after 1948. For example, in the 1980s, the Prague Theater of Jára Cimrman regularly performed there.
However, the building gradually fell into disrepair, the municipal district attempted unsuccessfully to sell it, and there was even consideration of demolition and land sale. The rescue of the building was thanks to the amateur performers from the Líšeň Theater, who organized benefits for the House of Workers. They were rewarded for this - they will have their home stage in the restored building.
