Karlovy Vary - The Karlovy Vary company Eden Group demolished almost the entire protected building Eboli on the Marian spa road in Karlovy Vary without the consent of heritage protectors. From the house inscribed on the UNESCO list
(editor's note: ???) only the façade wall remains. Builders are now reinforcing its remnants so that the remains of the building do not collapse into the street in the spa zone opposite the Grandhotel Pupp. Heritage protectors were shocked by the investor's actions, but representatives of Eden Group claim they are proceeding correctly, as reported by today's Deníky Bohemia (DB).
The Karlovy Vary magistrate agreed to the floor replacement, but not to the demolition of ceilings and the building. Therefore, it immediately filed a motion to stop the construction. Roman Procházka, director of the detached workplace of the National Heritage Institute in Loket, stated that the institute only approved some of the investor's requests. "We approved the renovation of the façade and the replacement of floor surfaces, not the replacement of load-bearing structures. We did not approve the replacement of windows either. We also rejected the extension for an elevator," Procházka told DB.
Eden Group, which operates a five-star Plaza hotel on the same street, is convinced that it acted correctly. "We are only doing what we have permission for, and that in accordance with the law," said Eden Group board member Jan Motlík. "We will negotiate with the heritage protectors. I have no doubt that this will be fully accommodated," Motlík believes. The investor faces a fine of only one hundred thousand for violating the heritage law. "The building authority could impose a much higher fine," Procházka noted.
Karlovy Vary Mayor Zdeněk Roubínek stated that such a brutal approach deserves punishment. "Moreover, the house did not get demolished overnight. I want to see the inspection logs of the relevant authorities. This is a bad example for other investors. If everything is true, the city's goodwill towards this investor will be minimal," said the mayor.
The spa hotel Eboli was built in 1867 as a guesthouse Goethe. In the 1940s, it was renamed to hotel Alfa and offered guests 33 beds. It was then acquired by the State Healing Spa, which operated it under the name Albania until 1990. The building has its own heritage protection. One of the most beautiful and best-preserved stained glass windows in all of Karlovy Vary was located in the staircases. In the 1990s, the spa hotel was purchased by Eden Group. According to DB, the investor wanted to align the floors in the hotels they own. And since the levels were not consistent, Eboli was demolished outright.
